The terrace at Greenhouse, tables under the monstera once the wall is open

The whole west wall folds away.

Nine metres of steel and glass, on a track. Push it back and the room doubles onto the terrace.

One room, thirteen hours, and a sun that keeps moving.

The glass faces west, so the room is never the same twice. This is roughly how a Thursday goes.

The east glass takes the sun before the road wakes up. First pour is at eight, and for the first hour the room belongs to whoever wants it quiet.

  2. Greenhouse at 11:30: brunch, all the way to three
    11:30

Brunch, all the way to three

Eggs, the pizza oven warming, and every window folded open. This is the loudest the room gets, and the terrace is the reason.

  3. Greenhouse at 16:00: the long flat hour
    16:00

    The long flat hour

Kitchen changes over. Coffee, cake, and the light coming in low and flat across the brick. Nobody is rushed out.

  4. Greenhouse at 18:30: the oven comes up
    18:30

    The oven comes up

Dinner starts. Pasta rolled that morning, the oven at full heat, and the first of the lamps going on down the length of the room.

  5. Greenhouse at 21:00: lamps, and the glass goes black
    21:00

Lamps, and the glass goes black

The jungle outside disappears and the windows turn into mirrors. The room gets smaller and warmer, which is the whole point of it.

Ferns and pothos hanging down a brick wall above shelves of stacked ceramic cups

It was a print shop with very good windows.

The building was a print shop until 2019. What it had going for it was a west wall of steel windows nobody had bothered to replace, and a ceiling high enough to hang things from.

We kept the windows and the brick and gave the rest of it to plants. There are around two hundred in the room now. The ferns came first because they are the only thing that likes the humidity a coffee machine puts into a closed space, and they have been dropping fronds over the counter ever since.
