Greenhouse

Two hundred plants, one wall of glass.

The building was a print shop until 2019. What it had going for it was a west wall of steel windows nobody had bothered to replace, and a ceiling high enough to hang things from.

How the room is kept

We kept the windows and the brick and gave the rest of it to plants. There are around two hundred in the room now. The ferns came first because they are the only thing that likes the humidity a coffee machine puts into a closed space, and they have been dropping fronds over the counter ever since.

Nothing here is on a schedule. The pothos gets cut back when it reaches the floor, the monstera by the door gets turned a quarter every few weeks so it does not lean, and twice a year the whole west wall gets taken down and re-hung. That is the entire system.

The light is the thing people actually come for, and it is the one part we did not build. It arrives through the glass at eight, crosses the brick all afternoon, and is gone by seven. After that the lamps do the work.

Best light is between four and six. Bring someone you can sit with.
